NRM’s National Treasurer Barbara Nekesa Pens Powerful Message on Mother’s Day, Urges Mothers To Rise As Nation Builders

Kampala, Uganda – On this Mother’s ’s Day, Amb. Barbara Nekesa Oundo, the National Treasurer of Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), has issued a stirring call to action directed especially at the country’s mothers, describing them as the “bedrock of national transformation.”In a strongly worded statement released today, Nekesa, celebrated the indispensable role of women while challenging them to embrace greater responsibility in shaping Uganda’s future.

“Mothers are not just caregivers; they are the first teachers, the moral compass, and the silent architects of our society,” Nekesa wrote. “On this Mother’s Day, I call upon every mother across Uganda — whether in the village, the market, the office, or the diaspora — to rise with renewed purpose. Teach your children the values of hard work, integrity, and love for our nation. Reject mediocrity and demand excellence in your homes and communities.”

The NRM leader emphasized the progress made under the NRM government in empowering women through programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and increased female representation in leadership.

She highlighted how these initiatives have enabled thousands of women, most especially mothers to access capital, start businesses, and improve household welfare.

“President Yoweri Museveni’s vision has always placed women at the center of development,” she noted. “But empowerment comes with responsibility. We must now move beyond receiving support to becoming drivers of wealth creation and guardians of our cultural values. Mothers, your hands rock the cradle — ensure that cradle produces leaders, innovators, and patriots who will take Uganda to the next level.”

Nekesa also addressed challenges facing women, including gender-based violence, limited access to land ownership in some areas, and the double burden of domestic and economic roles.

She urged mothers to support one another, mentor younger women, and actively participate in political processes to sustain the gains achieved over the years.

The message has resonated widely on social media and in women’s groups, with many praising its blend of appreciation and accountability.

Political observers see it as consistent with Nekesa’s style — firm, motivational, and deeply rooted in the NRM’s philosophy of self-reliance and collective progress.

As Uganda continues its journey toward middle-income status, Nekesa’s message serves as both a tribute to mother’s resilience and a strategic call for them to play an even bigger role in the country’s socio-economic transformation.

In closing her statement, the NRM National Treasurer declared: “To all mothers: Your strength built this nation. Your vision will sustain it. Happy Mother’s Day. Let us build together.”
