What You Need To Know:

Yesterday, President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr Michael Atingi-Ego as the new Bank of Uganda (BoU) Governor, with Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba as the Deputy Governor.

Atingi-Ego, 60, who was appointed Deputy Governor in March 2020, has been acting as the Governor since the demise of the late Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, who passed away in January 2022.

He was previously executive director of the Macroeconomics and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI), based in Harare, Zimbabwe before joining Bank of Uganda as Deputy Governor.

On the other hand, Professor Nuwagaba, a renowned economist and consultant on economic transformation, comes in to elevate to the Deputy Governor position and brings with him valuable expertise to the central bank’s leadership team.

The appointment, which was yet to be confirmed by sources at Presidency, but widely circulated as true on social media brings to an end the long wait for a substantial governor of the central bank, which economists often argued was crucial to the country’s economic stability.
