A growing rift within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) is unfolding in the Busoga sub-region, as a section of party leaders accuse First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga of intimidation and political suppression. The accusations emerge amid an increasingly high-stakes contest between Kadaga, the incumbent, and Speaker of Parliament Anita Among for the position of Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) on the NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).
During a meeting held in Buyende District on Wednesday, several NRM district councillors and chairpersons openly declared their support for Speaker Among. They also raised concerns about what they described as a climate of fear allegedly created by Kadaga’s camp.
“We are witnessing a climate of fear and political intolerance. Some leaders are being targeted simply for expressing support for alternative candidates,” said one councillor, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.
The leaders claim that Kadaga, who has held the influential CEC position for over a decade, is using her political clout to suppress dissent and stifle emerging voices within the party. They argue that such tactics are undermining the development of a healthy democratic environment in Busoga, traditionally a stronghold of the NRM.
Speaking at the same meeting, Speaker Among called for unity and fresh leadership to move the party forward.
“I don’t believe in divisions within our party. I come in peace, to unite us all for a common goal. You asked me to stand so that I can serve you better,” Among said.
She also pointed to her leadership record in Parliament and her ability to mobilise and unite. “If there’s one thing I know how to do well, it’s bringing people together and delivering results,” she added.
