Women Leaders In Mbale City have Endorsed Hon. Lydia Wanyoto As The Sole Candidate For Woman Mp Flag Bearer Mbale City.

As politics gains momentum, women leaders in Mbale City yesterday endorsed Lydia Wanyoto Mutende, the nrm national women league boss as the flag bearer for the forthcoming nrm primaries.

What You Need To Know:

Wanyoto ran unsuccessfully for Mbale City Woman MP in 2021, losing to Connie Nakayenze Galiwango, and her subsequent election petition and appeal were dismissed. 

Wanyoto has been active in NRM party activities, including mobilizing women’s leagues and supervising local elections. 

She was widowed in 2015 following the death of her husband, James Shinyabulo Mutende, a former Ugandan State Minister of Industry.

Wanyoto is a Ugandan lawyer, politician, and diplomat born around 1971 in Mbale, Uganda. 

She has held significant roles, including Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and briefly served as Head of the African Union Mission to Somalia in 2014. 

She was elected to the East African Legislative Assembly (2001–2012) and has been a prominent figure in the National Resistance Movement (NRM), currently serving as the NRM Women’s League Chairperson. 

Wanyoto’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Education in Languages from Uganda Christian University, a Bachelor of Laws, and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre. 

She is a strong advocate for girls’ education and gender equality, emphasizing its role in national development. She has served on the board of the National Planning Authority of Uganda since 2019 and was reappointed in 2024. 

Additionally, she is a member of the Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE) and the committee for establishing Uganda’s National Defence College.
