Lira, Uganda: The Uganda Law Society has confirmed that the brutal flogging incident involving the Director of King James Comprehensive School of Nursing occurred in February 2025, and that police have opened a case file against him following public outrage over a viral video that exposed the violence.

James Odongo, the school director, is seen in the video assaulting a man believed to be the boyfriend of a female student. The footage, which surfaced online this week, has since drawn widespread condemnation, prompting legal scrutiny and public calls for justice.

In a statement released on Monday, the Uganda Law Society said its Rule of Law Department had engaged relevant government agencies and verified that the incident happened months earlier, in February.

Despite efforts by the parties involved to settle the matter privately, the resolution failed, paving the way for formal legal action. The Radical New Bar revealed that the Lira Regional CID office is now handling the case and reviewing potential charges against Odongo.

“A police case has been opened at the Lira Regional CID office, which is considering the relevant charges against Mr. Odongo,” the ULS Vice President, Asiimwe Anthony, stated, urging the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.

He reaffirmed the Bar’s commitment to tracking the case to ensure justice is served. “We are committed to monitoring the situation to ensure justice is served in accordance with the rule of law,” he said.

The incident has reignited debate over violence in Uganda’s private education institutions and the impunity of administrators accused of abusing their authority.

Civic actors in Lira have since demanded that Mr. Odongo be suspended pending the outcome of investigations. Rights groups are also calling for independent oversight to prevent cover-ups, citing the months-long silence since the incident allegedly occurred
