Namisindwa, Uganda: A group of unidentified thugs broke into the computer laboratory of Namboko Seed Secondary School on Monday night, stealing eight desktop computers in what authorities believe was a coordinated inside job.
The raid, which has left school administrators and local leaders in shock, occurred just days after the arrival of a new headteacher.
Amos Masibo, the chairperson of the school’s board of governors, described the incident as a major setback to the school’s academic progress, especially in ICT.
“This is not just theft, it is sabotage,” Masibo said. “We had started making headway in modernizing our school and improving access to digital learning tools. Now all that effort has been dealt a heavy blow.”
Nabboge Bosco, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) of Namisindwa, condemned the break-in and confirmed the arrest of two school security guards believed to be key suspects in the case.
The suspects, identified as Khaloma Rogers and Sitsangi Sefu, were taken into custody for questioning after police noted inconsistencies in their statements.
“We are treating this as an internal job,” Bosco told DailyExpress. “The suspects were on duty the night the incident occurred, yet they claim not to have seen or heard anything. That alone raises serious questions.”
He added that a manhunt is ongoing for additional suspects who are believed to have played roles in the burglary. Police are working with local community members and intelligence teams to track down the culprits and recover the stolen equipment.
The loss of the computers comes at a time when schools across the country are being encouraged to integrate ICT into their curriculum as part of Uganda’s digital transformation agenda. Teachers and students at Namboko Seed SSS now fear their ability to teach and learn digital skills will be severely hampered.
The school, located in a rural part of Namisindwa District, has in recent years struggled with underfunding and infrastructural challenges. Local leaders have since called on the Ministry of Education and district security agencies to reinforce protection measures for rural government schools, particularly those with ICT infrastructure.
