FDC's Nandala Mafabi Duly Nominated for 2026 Presidential Race

Kampala — Uganda’s political landscape took a significant turn today as Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi was officially nominated to contest for the presidency in the 2026 General Election. The nomination, conducted by the Electoral Commission at its headquarters in Kampala, confirms the veteran legislator’s long-anticipated bid to challenge for the nation’s top office.

Hon. Mafabi, who has served for years as Member of Parliament for Budadiri West and held senior positions within the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), arrived at the nomination venue accompanied by party officials, supporters and civic leaders. His presentation of the required documents and payment of the nomination fees marked the culmination of months of consultations and nationwide mobilization.

In his post-nomination remarks, Mafabi described his candidacy as a “renewed call to service,” pledging to prioritize good governance, economic revitalization and inclusive development. “Ugandans deserve accountable leadership and practical solutions to the challenges they face daily,” he told journalists, adding that his campaign would emphasize unity, institutional reform and youth empowerment.

Political analysts view Mafabi’s entry into the race as a major boost to opposition politics, noting his reputation for fiscal discipline and his experience chairing Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee. His nomination is also expected to reshape alliances and voting patterns ahead of the 2026 polls, where several other contenders are expected to be cleared in the coming days.

The Electoral Commission reiterated its commitment to running a free and transparent nomination process, reminding all candidates to adhere to the electoral laws and campaign guidelines. With his candidacy now formalized, Hon. Mafabi begins the next phase of nationwide campaigning, positioning himself as a credible alternative in Uganda’s fast-approaching general election.
