In a show of political solidarity, Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) have announced that they will jointly escort President Yoweri Museveni to the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters in Lweza, Kampala, for his presidential nomination on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.”
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong and PLU Secretary General David Kabanda confirmed the arrangement during a joint press conference at the NRM headquarters in Kampala on September 22, 2025.
The President is expected to arrive for nomination between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on the scheduled day.
According to Mr. Todwong, the decision to collaborate reflects a “shared commitment to stability, peace, and continuity” as Uganda heads into the highly anticipated 2026 general elections.
“The NRM and PLU are working hand-in-hand to ensure this process is smooth, secure, and well-organized,” Todwong said.
Mr. Kabanda echoed the message, adding that the joint escort is meant to demonstrate national unity and reassure Ugandans of a peaceful nomination process.
“Our supporters will be mobilized, but we are calling for discipline and respect for the Electoral Commission’s guidelines to avoid unnecessary confrontations,” Kabanda said.
Security preparations are underway, with police confirming that measures have been put in place to safeguard the event and ensure smooth traffic flow in Kampala. The Electoral Commission has urged all parties to maintain peace and respect the law during the nomination period.
With just months to the general elections, President Museveni’s nomination is expected to set the tone for an intense campaign season. Both supporters and critics will be watching closely to see how this alliance between NRM and PLU plays out on the political stage.
