Kampala, Uganda: Collins Tanga has been declared the new Chairperson of the NRM National Youth League after securing a landslide victory in Thursday’s decentralized elections, with 2,185 votes (68%) against rival Kiconco Brenda’s 1,017 votes (32%).

The election, which followed an earlier nullified poll, was organized across the 151 districts in line with the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) directive, a move that attracted wide participation and quelled earlier disputes.

Tanga, son of NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi, had initially been declared winner at Kololo but saw his victory annulled by the NRM Tribunal after a consolidated petition filed by Kiconco, Wilson Otto, and Mackline Natukwasa, who alleged irregularities, prompting the tribunal to overturn the victory and order a fresh vote.

In the nullified election, Collins had outpolled Kiconco with 1,567 votes against her 1,355 in a tight but Thursday’s rerun dramatically reversed the outcome as Collins swept nearly 90% of the districts, a result that party insiders say validates his earlier win.

Jubilant after his declaration, he told reporters; “You can’t stop reggae. This victory is national, and I want to assure my fellow youths that this is their time to work.”

In other races, Ssemuddu Ivan is on course to take the Vice Chairperson (Central) seat, while Diana Ampaire Kampe already clinched the NRM flag for National Female Youth MP, beating Mercy Kanyesigye, the closest rival.

For Western Youth, Tumwebaze Mwine is the party’s flag carrier, while Sam Begira emerged victorious in Central for the Youth MP flag. Results from other positions were yet to be confirmed by press time.
