Museveni urges cultural leaders to champion wealth creation

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on cultural leaders across the country to play an active role in guiding their people toward wealth creation and unity, emphasizing that socio-economic transformation must go hand in hand with development if Ugandans are to achieve sustainable prosperity.

The President made the remarks in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among during the 3rd coronation anniversary of His Royal Highness Paul Sande Etomeileng Emolot III, the Emorimor held at Emokori Boma Grounds in Bukedea District.

President Museveni congratulated the Emorimor and the Iteso community for the achievements realized during his three years of leadership. He commended the Kingdom for embracing the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) vision of wealth creation and socio-economic transformation.

“Three years ago, you were entrusted with the mantle of presiding over the cultural affairs of your people. Today, we celebrate the achievements registered under your reign,” he said.

“Cultural leadership plays a vital role in preserving people’s identity, their languages, customs, and traditions. I commend the Kingdom’s leadership for embracing the NRM message on wealth creation and for mobilizing the community to engage in productive enterprises.”

The President also highlighted key achievements of the NRM government, including maintaining peace and stability, uniting Ugandans beyond sectarian divides, expanding education and healthcare, and investing heavily in infrastructure such as roads and power generation. However, he noted that development must translate into tangible household wealth.

“Development alone is not enough. It must be translated into jobs and wealth for families to be meaningful,” he emphasized.

President Museveni further appealed to both political and cultural leaders to foster unity and tolerance among communities, warning against the dangers of identity-based politics.

“The NRM’s philosophy is built on interests, not identity. Interests such as the need for schools, hospitals, roads, and electricity are shared by all people. When leaders emphasize identity over interests, they divide society and slow progress,” he cautioned.

In her brief opening remarks, Rt. Hon. Anita Among commended the NRM government under President Museveni for reinstating cultural institutions that had been abolished in the past. She noted that these institutions continue to play a vital role in promoting unity, preserving heritage, and fostering community development.
