Minister Amongi Initiates Community Loan Scheme for Lira City Residents

LIRA CITY – The Honorable Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi Akena, has officially launched a community-focused loan scheme designed to provide affordable capital to residents of Lira City.

Dubbed the “Lira City Empowerment Loan Initiative,” the program was announced on 17-November-2025 at one of the  popular local online tv called LCC TV bass in Lira City .

The initiative is presented as a direct give-back to the community, aiming to stimulate local economic growth by supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), market vendors, and youth and women-led projects.

“Economic empowerment is the bedrock of a stable and prosperous community,” Minister Amongi stated during the launch. “This initiative is my personal commitment to ensuring that our people, especially our women and youth, have access to the financial tools they need to start or expand their businesses. We are not just giving handouts; we are investing in the entrepreneurial spirit of Lira.”

The loans are characterized by their low-interest rates and flexible repayment schedules, terms that are significantly more favorable than those typically offered by commercial banks. This is intended to make credit accessible to individuals who have viable business ideas but lack the collateral or financial history to secure traditional financing.

Beneficiaries expressed optimism about the program’s impact. “I have been selling tomatoes in the market for years, but I have never had enough capital to buy in bulk,” said Winny Akullu, a vendor from Lira main market. “With this loan, I can now increase my stock and my profits. This is a true blessing for my family.”

Local leaders have welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to reduce unemployment and foster self-reliance. The Lira City Local leaders, commended the Minister for the direct intervention, urging beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly to ensure the program’s sustainability.
