Independent parliamentary candidate Rodney Mukula Akongel, who is contesting for the Soroti City East MP seat, has been hospitalized following a sudden illness on the campaign trail, with early reports pointing to suspected poisoning.

Akongel a son of former NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, Capt. Mike Mukula was rushed to Doctor’s Plaza Clinic in Soroti City on Monday evening after collapsing while canvassing support. Medical personnel at the facility are working to stabilize his condition, sources confirmed.

The youthful aspirant, considered one of the frontrunners in the race, has been aggressively mobilizing in recent weeks, pitching a manifesto that appeals to ordinary citizens and positioning himself as a fresh force in the constituency.

A local political observer told this publication that Akongel is widely seen as a potential successor to the incumbent Soroti City East MP, Hon. Edmond Ariko, who has shifted his political ambitions to Gweri County in Soroti District.

According to preliminary accounts, Akongel is believed to have been poisoned by an unidentified individual during his field activities, although authorities have not issued any official statement on the incident. Efforts to reach his campaign manager for a comment were unsuccessful.
