BUGISU DRAWS THE LINE: Youth backs Hon. counsel Lydia Wanyoto the Undisputed Front-Runner for Speaker as Momentum Sweeps Across the Nation
Youth leaders across the Bugisu Sub-region have strongly endorsed Hon. Lydia Wanyoto Mutende for the position of Speaker of Parliament, rallying Members of Parliament and stakeholders to unite behind what they describe as “home-grown national leadership.”
Speaking on behalf of the youth, Mafabi Mutwalib noted that Hon. Wanyoto is the only female contender from Bugisu and a tested cadre of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), having served two terms on the Central Executive Committee and risen through the party ranks to national prominence. “She is on the national grid, experienced, and understands our people, having traversed the entire region,” he emphasized.
The youth leaders called upon MPs from Bugisu to stand firm and back one of their own, urging NRM chairpersons in the sub-region to promote unity and nurture local talent rather than divert support elsewhere. They described Hon. Wanyoto as a resilient leader and widow who relates to the grassroots and carries the aspirations of ordinary citizens.
Hassan Waswa, representing youth from Northern Uganda, expressed concern over what he termed a clique of leaders opposing her bid, stressing that the youth of Mbale stand solidly behind her candidacy. “For the first time, Bugisu has a heroine stepping forward for Speakership. This is our moment,” he said.
Kahandi Ayub, Youth League Vice Chairperson for Mbale City, highlighted Hon. Wanyoto’s distinguished journey — from the NRM Secretariat to the East African Legislative Assembly, service in Somalia, the Women’s League CEC, and now as Member of Parliament for Mbale City. “She is experienced, articulate, intelligent, and ready to serve at the highest level,” he noted.
The youth further appealed to elders, regional leaders, and stakeholders across Uganda to rise above personal interests and support a candidate capable of elevating Bugisu’s voice on the national stage.
In a unified message, the leaders called for solidarity and pride in regional leadership, urging all MPs and citizens to rally behind Hon. Lydia Wanyoto Mutende for Speaker — a candidate they believe embodies experience, resilience, and national vision.
