Photos: Speaker Among Courts Powerful Muslim, Buganda’s Prince Nakibinge

In a strategic move amid intensifying speculation over the upcoming speakership race in Uganda’s 12th Parliament, Speaker Anita Among paid a high-profile courtesy call on one of the country’s most influential Muslim figures.

This afternoon, the Rt. Hon. Speaker visited His Royal Highness Dr. Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu, the Titular Head of the Muslim Community in Uganda and a respected prince from the Buganda royal family.

Prince Nakibinge, also known as Prince Nakibinge Kakungulu, serves as a Senior Advisor to the Kabaka of Buganda and has long championed education and development within the Muslim community through initiatives like the Uganda Muslim Education Association (UMEA) and the establishment of institutions on Kibuli Hill.

During the warm engagement, Speaker Among briefed the royal leader on key legislation and policy measures Parliament has advanced to support the Muslim community. She highlighted ongoing efforts to address concerns and promote inclusion.

“She also conveyed her appreciation for the guidance and support he continues to extend to legislators in the execution of their duties,” the statement from the Speaker’s office read.

The meeting underscores Among’s outreach to key cultural and religious stakeholders as political alignments shift ahead of critical parliamentary elections. Prince Nakibinge’s endorsement carries significant weight in Buganda and among Uganda’s large Muslim population, potentially bolstering Ajmong’s bid to retain the speakership amid emerging challengers.

The courtesy call reflects a broader effort to strengthen ties between Parliament and traditional institutions, fostering dialogue on national unity and community priorities. Observers see it as a calculated step in navigating Uganda’s complex political landscape, where royal and religious influence often intersects with legislative power.

Anita Among is facing serious competition with the Justice Minister, Hon. Norbert Mao, who is also the Democratic Party President General and Lands State Minister, Princess Percy Namuganza.
