Eng. Julius Nakiyi, the MP Elect for Budadiri East, today held high-level talks with the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, aimed at advancing a unified development agenda for the Bugisu Subregion.
The meeting, which took place Today 20th March 2026 at Katomi Kingdom Resort Hotel in Garuga along the shores of Lake Victoria, was also attended by Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, former Vice President and current Presidential Advisor on Environment and Wetlands.
During the engagement, Eng. Nakiyi emphasized the need for strong institutional support as leaders from Bugisu prepare to actively participate in legislation and national lobbying efforts.
He noted that collaboration with the Office of the Speaker will be instrumental in driving key Bills and influencing policy decisions that directly benefit the subregion.
He further highlighted the persistent challenge of landslides affecting districts such as Bulambuli, Sironko, and Bududa, calling for urgent and sustainable government interventions to address recurring environmental disasters in the Elgon region.
He also raised the need for Sironko and Bulambuli to be included in the national cattle compensation program, noting that the areas were equally affected by cattle rustling.
Prof. Bukenya welcomed the concerns raised and committed to developing a comprehensive strategy paper to guide government action on environmental and disaster mitigation efforts in Bugisu.
Rt. Hon. Tayebwa, in his remarks, pledged full support to leaders from the subregion in championing its development priorities. He also commended Eng. Nakiyi for his charisma and leadership, recalling their shared history at Makerere University, and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute meaningfully to national leadership.
The Deputy Speaker further thanked the people of Budadiri East for entrusting Eng. Nakiyi with leadership, noting that he personally knows him as a dependable leader who has the capacity to deliver on his promises.
