An atmosphere of thanksgiving, reflection, and spiritual renewal filled North Mbale Diocese as Christians, clergy, political leaders, and community members gathered to bid farewell to the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Dr. Stephen Samuel Kazimba Mugalu, who is preparing to retire from active service in August 2027 after years of dedicated leadership.
The historic occasion formed part of the Archbishop's nationwide farewell tour, a journey that has seen him visit dioceses across the country as he reflects on God's faithfulness throughout his tenure and encourages believers to remain steadfast in their Christian calling.
From the moment Archbishop Kazimba arrived, the Diocese was engulfed in joy and gratitude as Christians welcomed him with songs of praise, prayers, and heartfelt appreciation for his unwavering commitment to serving God and transforming lives across Uganda.
Addressing the congregation, Archbishop Kazimba delivered a powerful message centered on unity, love, humility, and service to God. He reminded Christians that while church leaders may come and go, the mission of Christ remains constant.
"The strength of the Church is found in our unity. Let us love one another, support one another, and continue serving God faithfully. As I prepare to retire, my prayer is that believers remain focused on Christ and continue advancing the work of God with one heart and one purpose," he said.
The Archbishop emphasized that Christians must resist divisions and instead embrace forgiveness, reconciliation, and cooperation, noting that the Church can only flourish when believers walk together in faith and harmony.
His message resonated deeply with the congregation, many of whom described his leadership as one that has inspired spiritual growth, accountability, and renewed commitment to Christian values.
Speaking on behalf of the laity, Mr. Nanjera, the Head of Laity, praised Archbishop Kazimba for his remarkable leadership since his enthronement. He highlighted several achievements, including the provision of educational scholarships for lay leaders, continuous spiritual mentorship, and his firm stance on protecting biblical values.
Mr. Nanjera also acknowledged the financial challenges facing North Mbale Diocese and called upon Christians to embrace stewardship and support initiatives aimed at creating sustainable sources of income for the Diocese.
One of the most notable figures at the event was Hon. Julius Nakiyi, Member of Parliament for Budadiri East and Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, whose tremendous efforts were widely credited for the success of the function.
Throughout the preparations, Hon. Nakiyi demonstrated exceptional commitment, mobilization, and sacrifice to ensure that the Diocese hosted a dignified and memorable farewell celebration worthy of the Archbishop's service.
In his remarks, Hon. Nakiyi called upon Christians to work together in building a stronger Church and promoting unity within their communities.
He revealed that he personally contributed UGX 10 million towards organizing the function, emphasizing that generosity is not measured by wealth but by one's willingness to share.
"Giving is not about being rich; it is about having a heart that is willing to share for the common good and for the development of God's work," Hon. Nakiyi said.
He further extended appreciation to all individuals who supported the event financially, morally, and spiritually, acknowledging that the success of the function was the result of collective effort and shared commitment.
Hon. Nakiyi also conveyed greetings from leaders who were unable to attend due to ongoing Parliamentary orientation programs but nevertheless made significant contributions toward the event. Among those recognized were Hon. Asha Nabulo, Woman Member of Parliament for Sironko District, and Hajji Umar Nangoli of Mbale City Northern Division.
Several leaders who attended the function also joined Christians in honoring the Archbishop's legacy. These included Hon. Wanyoto Godfrey, Member of Parliament for Budadiri West, Hon. Guga Nabende, Chairperson LCV Sironko District, Mr. Wozisi Fred, the District Planner, representatives from the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, and the Office of the Resident District Commissioner represented by Mr. Allan, the Assistant RDC of Sironko District, among many other political and community leaders.
The leaders unanimously praised Archbishop Kazimba for providing moral guidance, strengthening the Church, and fostering values that have positively impacted communities throughout Uganda.
In his address, the Bishop of North Mbale Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Gidudu, paid glowing tribute to the Archbishop's leadership journey, describing it as transformational and inspirational.
Bishop Gidudu noted that Archbishop Kazimba's leadership principles have produced visible results within the Church of Uganda and have encouraged many church leaders to embrace servant leadership.
"His Grace has led with humility, wisdom, integrity, and faith. His leadership has strengthened the Church and inspired countless believers across the country. His legacy will continue to guide future generations," Bishop Gidudu remarked.
As the ceremony drew to a close, Christians, church leaders, and guests presented gifts to Archbishop Kazimba as a sign of appreciation for his years of faithful service and dedication to the Anglican Church.
