President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has granted permission for the relocation of Mbale garage operators from church land in the city centre to Busamaga Central Forest Reserve, paving the way for the expansion of Mbale City, officials have said.
The relocation process will be spearheaded by Mbale City Town Clerk Assy Abirebe and the chairman of the Mbale City Land Board, Counsel Paul Wanyoto Mugoya.
According to sources, the move follows engagements between the chairman city land board and the Church over land occupied by garage operators around the Diocesan headquarters and St Andrew's Cathedral. The matter that had remained unresolved for several years.
Sources further said, the latest development stems from follow-up discussions initiated after the 2023 visit by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to St Andrew's Cathedral, where he attended a Sunday service.
The proposed relocation is expected to accommodate artisans currently operating on the church land, as well as users of the existing lorry park and tipper lorry park.
On Wednesday morning, the Mbale City Physical Planning Department held a meeting at Rocy Hotel to launch the implementation process.
Officials said a technical team is expected to begin fieldwork by opening boundaries and collecting coordinates for the proposed relocation site.
City officials said the exercise is intended to facilitate orderly urban development while providing a designated area for affected operators.
