Uganda’s Ministry of ICT Receives 100 Computers from dfcu Group to Bridge Digital Divide in Underserved Schools

Kampala, Uganda – The Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and National Guidance has taken a significant step toward digital inclusion with the donation of 100 computers from dfcu Group and the dfcu Foundation. The handover, announced today by Dr. Amina Zawedde, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, strengthens an existing partnership aimed at empowering learners in underserved communities across the country.

Dr. Amina Zawedde highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative during the event. “Today, we strengthened our partnership with @dfcugroup and dfcu Foundation with the receipt of 100 computers to support schools in underserved communities across Uganda,” she stated.

The donation builds directly on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Ministry and dfcu Group last year. That agreement laid the foundation for collaborative efforts to enhance digital infrastructure and skills development in education and local governance.

The 100 computers will be distributed to selected schools in hard-to-reach and underserved areas, providing students with much-needed access to modern technology. According to Dr. Zawedde, the equipment will enable hands-on learning in digital skills, coding, research, and online resources — competencies considered essential for Uganda’s future workforce in an increasingly digital economy.

This move addresses a persistent challenge in Uganda’s education sector, where many rural and peri-urban schools lack basic computing facilities. By equipping these institutions, the partnership aims to reduce disparities in educational outcomes and prepare young Ugandans for opportunities in technology-driven industries.

Broader Community Impact under the Parish Development Model

Beyond schools, the collaboration extends to community development initiatives aligned with the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM). Under this component of the partnership, dfcu Group will deliver specialized financial management training to Parish Chiefs and local Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs).

The training is expected to strengthen local financial governance, improve accountability in PDM fund utilization, and enhance the capacity of grassroots institutions to manage resources effectively for community projects such as agriculture, small businesses, and infrastructure.

Dr. Zawedde emphasized that the partnership reflects a holistic approach: “Beyond digital access, the partnership also supports community development efforts under the Parish Development Model (PDM), with dfcu providing financial management training for Parish Chiefs and local SACCOs.”

Partnership Context and Future Outlook

dfcu Group, one of Uganda’s leading financial institutions, and its Foundation have a track record of supporting education, financial literacy, and community empowerment programs. The latest donation underscores the private sector’s growing role in complementing government efforts to achieve national development goals, including Uganda Vision 2040 and the National Development Plan.

Officials from both sides expressed optimism that this collaboration will expand in the coming months, potentially including teacher training on digital tools, maintenance support for the donated equipment, and further rollout of financial literacy programs.

The initiative arrives at a critical time as Uganda accelerates its digital transformation agenda, with ongoing investments in broadband infrastructure, e-government services, and ICT integration in public institutions.
