Mbale City Officials Boycotts World Day For Safety & Health At Work.

Mbale City officials on Friday boycotted the World day for safety and health at work celebrations.

The function held at Mbale cricket ground with a theme; "Impacts of Climate change on occupational Safety and health - Uganda's response"

The event  aimed at promoting awareness for preventing occupational accidents and diseases.

According to Mbale City Woman MP Connie Nakayenze Galiwango said "I expected to see  all workers in the city in this function. But I'm shocked," Ms Galiwango said.

She warned  employers to stop mistreating the workers and provide them with the necessary support.

"People are working in difficult conditions. It would have been better to address them," she said.

The State Minister for Elderly Affairs, Mr. Dominic Mafabi Gidudu, who was the guest of honor wondered why Mbale City officials boycotted the event.

"Today is an international day for safety and health. It's a great day for people with industries employees and employers to have been here" He said.

He appealed to leaders to stop dodging such important National events yet they're the host.

"We should take such functions seriously and see it as an opportunity to mobilize people. We would have wished to see workers and employers here," Gidudu said.

The minister also noted that all the chairs are empty.

"We are not here to address ourselves but the people, so it's important to provide accountability to the people we lead," he added.

Dominic said, "Mbale Industrial Area has a lot of industries. You should have mobilized these industrialists to be here so that they can hear what we're saying and enable them to make changes in how they operate."

Wasukira Francis, a furious resident of Mbale City, allegedly accused Mbale City Council leaders of potentially boycotting the function because the organizers may not have given them the opportunity to handle finances.

"This was an advantage for the city to benefit as the hosts, but they only addressed primary pupils," he said.
