In a bid to improve education standards in his constituency, Counsel Paul Mugoya Wanyoto, aspiring MP for Mbale Northern City Division, has launched a scholarship program targeting disadvantaged children.
Wanyoto who also serve as Chairman Mbale city land board, kicked off the initiative at Nakaloke Playground during Oluhuje event, where he awarded 30 bursaries to support Education of the children from the Banyole community in Eastern Uganda.
He has since extended the program to Nabweya Ward, offering an additional 50 bursaries, bringing the total to 80.
Speaking at a community event at Nabweya police post on Saturday, Wanyoto said: "To the people of Nabweya Ward, I’m providing 50 scholarships. Local leaders from the twelve cells in the ward will identify the beneficiaries we support their education."
He added that similar support packages will be extended to other areas in the Northern City Division.
According to Wanyoto, his key focus is on providing foundational education from Primary One to Senior Six. However, he also pledged to support some students in tertiary institutions.
"If we don't educate our children, they may end up on the streets and disturb the community. We must take education seriously," he emphasized.
“If we work together with the local council leaders, we can minimize these challenges, as some of these children drop out of schools and end up on the streets due to domestic violence and economic hardships in their homes,” Wanyoto said.
"My job is to lobby for Nabweya, Namanyonyi, and the entire Northern Division. I don't make empty promises. What I promise, I deliver. I know my people need money and it’s coming because I have the money," Wanyoto said.
Zakaliya Safiyi Mudebo, LC1 Chairman of Lumumba Cell, expressed his gratitude to counsel Paul Wanyoto for always standing with the community.
"I urge the people of Nabweya Ward to rally behind Wanyoto. He is not only one of our own, but also a man who listens and supports everyone." Mudebo said.
Suleiman Modoi, Chairman of Kilulu A, praised Wanyoto’s efforts: "Paul, you’re doing a great job, you have our blessings, We’re praying for you to reach Parliament, stay true to your mission. What you’ve done is not about campaigns; it’s a sample of what's to come."
He urged the community to remain united and support Wanyoto: "Many will come seeking votes, but some have disappointed us before. Let’s stand together as the people of Nabweya, Namanyonyi, and Northern Division and support someone who truly cares."
He also urged the residents not to be divided because of party politics, Paul is our son, we must give him all the support.
According to Mbale City Probation Officer Dominic Wanzira, the city is estimated to have over 120 street children.
"This growing population comes with concerns about vulnerability to exploitation, increased crime rates, and health risks." Wanzira said.
"In Mbale City, street children are often driven into this situation by a combination of family dysfunction and societal challenges such as Poverty, neglect, and domestic abuse at home while some children are sent out to beg in order to support their families." He added.
