Mbale SS Launches Shs4B Science and Innovation Hub at 75th Jubilee

Mbale Secondary School on Saturday, June 14, 2025, launched the construction of a Shs4 billion Science, Innovation, and Technology Hub during its 75th Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The event, held at the school grounds under the theme “Enhancing Innovation and Excellence.”

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni pledged Shs30 million toward the project, which aims to foster scientific excellence in Eastern Uganda.

Other notable contributions included Shs5 million from Bamwise Company, Shs3 million from Nkoma Secondary School, Shs2.5 million from Centenary Bank, and Shs2 million from Housing Finance Bank, among others.

Mr. Moses Buyera, the head teacher of Mbale SS, reflected on the school’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a leading academic institution with over 5,000 students and nearly 300 dedicated staff members.

“This 75th Anniversary is not just a celebration. Our greatest mission now is to raise Shs4 billion to construct a Science, Innovation, and Technology Hub that will become the nerve center of innovation in the region,” Buyera said.

“Mbale SS is strategically positioned to become a national model for science-based secondary education. We already host brilliant minds, and now we seek to amplify their potential with modern laboratories, digital learning infrastructure, research linkages, and innovation spaces. With the science block under construction and a new multi-purpose hall underway, we are not just dreaming, we are doing,” he added.

Mbale City Woman MP Connie Nakayenze Galiwango, popularly known as Mama Mbale, used the occasion to call on the government to increase salaries for Arts teachers to match those of their Science counterparts.

She emphasized the need for equal treatment of teachers regardless of their subject specialization, noting that the ongoing salary disparity has caused a rift, with some Arts teachers returning to classrooms while others remain on strike.

Galiwango, also observed low parental turnout, attributing it to the event’s science-focused theme.

Uthman Mugoya, Interim Chairman of the Mbale SS Old Students Association, said the alumni had initiated the science hub project as a way to foster scientific and technological advancement.

“As we celebrated 75 years as old students, we came up with this initiative. The hub will serve as an innovation center for scientists and innovators. We aim to work closely with alumni and seek support from telecom companies, the banking sector, the Uganda Communications Commission, the government, and other well-wishers to bring this vision to life,” Mugoya said.
