Wayi Wayi Foundation Embarks On Skilling Gal Child & Women In Bugisu

Young mothers and youths in Mbale and Manafwa districts are getting a new chance at life through skills training provided by Offering Foundation Wayi Wayi.

Many young girls in the region drop out of school due to poverty, lack of opportunities and early marriages, forcing them to take on family responsibilities at a very young age. Some of these young mothers also face domestic violence, leaving many as single parents with little hope for the future.

To address these challenges, Offering Foundation Wayi Wayi, a non-profit organisation operating in Nabumali Town Council in Mbale District and Khabutoola Sub-county in Manafwa District, has started empowering communities with vocational skills so that they can support themselves and their families.

Speaking during the organisation’s first graduation ceremony for more than 30 trainees who completed a six-month course in tailoring, fashion and design in Khabutoola Sub-county, the director, Paul Denis Wamboko, said the initiative was introduced after identifying the high number of school dropouts in the two districts.

“We realised that many young mothers had dropped out of school and lost hope. That is why we started equipping them with practical skills so they can earn a living and support their families,” Wamboko said.

Mutama Seth the LC3 Chairperson of Khabutoola Sub-county said poverty and illiteracy have contributed to the high number of school dropouts in the area.

“We appreciate Offering Foundation Wayi Wayi for empowering our young mothers with skills that will help them improve their livelihoods,” he said.

Robert Wanyina, the Territory Manager for Elgon and Sebei at Airtel Uganda, urged the graduates to use the skills they have acquired to transform their lives.

“Put into practice what you have learnt and use these skills to improve your lives and support your families,” Wanyina advised.

The Guest of Honour, Moses Wambogo, the Programme and Impact Manager at Baamaina First Foundation in Mafudu, Sironko District, encouraged the graduates to continue advancing their skills.

“Do not stop at this certificate. Continue learning and aim higher so that you can become important people in your communities,” he said.

Some of the Graduates thanked the organisation, saying life had been difficult after leaving school for marriage.

They said the tailoring skills they acquired will help them earn a living and support their families.
