Hon. Wakooli Godfrey Matembu, the Member of Parliament for Butiru County in Manafwa District, has contributed Shs 1 million towards the construction of a school gate at Bubulo Girls High School during a successful fundraising dinner.
The fundraising event, held on April 6 at Wash and Wills Hotel in Mbale City, brought together alumni, leaders, and well-wishers, raising over Shs 5 million to support the ongoing project.
Organized by the school’s Old Girls (alumni), the initiative aims to complete the construction of a modern gate at the school located in Manafwa Town Council.
The project is estimated to cost Shs 40 million, of which Shs 20 million has already been raised, leaving a balance of Shs 20 million.
The fundraising campaign has included several activities such as alumni contributions through a WhatsApp platform, a successful car wash at Mbale Sports Club, and a mission week at the school.
During the mission week, alumni mentored students on life skills and donated essential items including sanitary pads and scholastic materials.
Speaking at the event, the chairperson of the gate construction committee, Eunice Sarah Wekesa, emphasized the need to raise the remaining funds.
“The total cost of the project is Shs 40 million. We have already raised half of that amount, and our focus now is to mobilize the remaining balance to complete the gate,” she said.
She also noted that the school has produced many prominent individuals and called upon former students and well-wishers to continue supporting the initiative.
The head teacher, Kharono Sarah Irene, highlighted several challenges facing the school, including the lack of a perimeter fence, dilapidated buildings, and low student enrollment.
“The school still faces significant challenges. We need more support to improve the learning environment and attract more students,” she said.
Dr. Wangisi Massa, who represented Mbale District Woman MP Mirriam Mukhaye and is also an alumna of the school, said the initiative is part of broader efforts to restore the institution’s former glory.
“This school belongs to you. Take charge, make an impact, and support it until it regains its glory. That is how we transformed Nabumali High School—by working together,” she said.
She further called upon the church and all stakeholders to support the school and allow alumni to actively participate in its revival.
Through her representative, Hon. Mukhaye urged the people of Bugisu and other well-wishers to contribute towards the development of the school.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including a representative of the Bishop of Mbale Diocese, Wilson Nandaa, who was represented by Canon Titus. The church pledged its support towards the school’s development efforts.
