Response from The spokesperson of the Bugisu Cultural Institution (Bukuka), Hon. Steven Masiga, has issued a detailed statement clarifying the lineage and cultural legitimacy of His Highness the Umukuka of Bugisu, Jude Mike Mudoma, amid what he described as ongoing misinformation campaigns.

Masiga, a legal scholar and cultural historian, stated that the Umukuka was born in Buyobo in 1956 and underwent the traditional Imbalu circumcision rites in December 1974 while still a student at Gulu High School. He emphasized that the ceremony was conducted in accordance with Bagisu customs, noting that the cultural practice continues today, including the giving of gifts (biwano) during such rites.

According to Masiga, the Umukuka received several gifts during his Imbalu ceremony, including money, livestock, and other items, reflecting the strong cultural support and recognition from his community.

Providing a detailed account of the royal lineage, Masiga traced the Umukuka’s ancestry across multiple generations. He identified his father as Mzee Butulumayo Mudoma, born in the 1920s, his grandfather as Mzee Malemwa Stephen, born around the 1880s, and his great-grandfather as Mzee Wagido, born around the 1850s. All are said to have originated from Buteza in the Bumayuya clan and are buried there, reinforcing the family’s deep-rooted ties to the Bugisu region.

Masiga dismissed claims questioning the Umukuka’s heritage as false and malicious, alleging that such narratives are being driven by individuals seeking to create division within the community. He stressed that the role of Bukuka is to provide accurate cultural guidance and counter misinformation that could disrupt social harmony.

He further maintained that the Umukuka fully meets all cultural and statutory requirements for the throne, citing his birth, upbringing, and ancestral roots within Bugisu as clear evidence of legitimacy.

“In summary, any attack on Bukuka and the Umukuka is an attack on the entire Bugisu community,” Masiga said, warning that efforts to spread falsehoods would be firmly resisted.

He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to preserving cultural integrity and ensuring that misleading narratives do not take root within society.
