Parliament has confirmed this procurement of two ceremonial vehicles and houses for Speaker Anita Among and her Deputy Thomas Tayebwa.
The tow S-class series L500 L AMG Line Vehicles cost a shopping pound sterling 520,000 which is equivalent to 2.8bn Uganda shillings
One vehicle for the speaker has arrived and another one is expected to arrive in the country end of this week
However, the procurement which was approved by the parliamentary commission has caused a backlash, especially during the current hard hitting economic times. However, Commissioner Agather Atuhaire who investigated the saga said the procurement of the car was conducted irregularly.
Ms Akampurira, further said: "We have all our top officials in government that have official houses and it is only Parliament that has not been having official houses for the Speakers,”
“These are not their own houses, and as I talk now, the Rt Hon Anita Among has a very good house and Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa has a very good house.
However, as Parliament, we find it wise and comfortable that we have a house where our Speaker sleeps. Once they are not in those respective offices, then the houses are taken back,” she added.
She went on to explain that Parliament has been spending heftily to rent a house for the Speaker and that building a permanent official residence would in the long run save the tax payers’ money.
“The speakers, who left, had a lot of allowances for housing so we said no, instead of giving out a lot of money, let us put this money together and put up houses. It will be a parliamentary house but not private houses but for the speakers.” she said.
