As the 2026 general elections draw closer, various members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have flooded the party electoral commission in Kampala to pick nomination forms to contest as party flag bearers for different positions, including Members of Parliament (MPs), LCV Chairpersons, and municipal/city division seats.

The exercise commenced on Monday, June 2, and will run until June 15, 2025, at the NRM Electoral Commission Offices, Plot 13 Kyadondo Road, Kampala.

Some of the individuals who expressed interest in the NRM flag and picked up nomination forms are high-profile government officials who intend to retain their parliamentary seats.

They include Vice President Jessica Alupo, who intends to retain her seat as Katakwi District Woman MP; Speaker of Parliament Anita Among (Bukedea District Woman MP); and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, who also picked up nomination forms to express his interest in retaining his seat as Ruhinda North MP in Mitooma District.

Tayebwa told reporters that if re-elected, he will once again contest for the position of Deputy Speaker.

Other aspirants include the NRM Chairperson Women’s League, Lydia Wanyoto, who aspires to represent Mbale City in the August House. Wanyoto, who is the current NRM flag bearer for the same constituency, was defeated in the 2021 general election by the independent-leaning NRM candidate, Connie Galiwango, who many analysts say is more popular in the constituency than Wanyoto.

Many have argued that the NRM party favors Wanyoto, but voters on the ground prefer a different candidate. Mbale City was one of the hotly contested MP seats in the 2021 elections.

Galiwango and some other high-profile NRM officials, including former Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, alleged that “mafias” in the NRM party endeavored to alter the election results in favor of Wanyoto but failed.

A total of six candidates, including the incumbent Connie Galiwango; Board Chairperson for the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), Dr. Sarah Wasagali Kanaabi; and the National Coordinator for the Emyooga program, Rita Namuwenge, among others, have expressed interest in the seat.

Wanyoto told reporters what she intends to do for the people of Mbale city.

“To draw a city plan that involves new infrastructure, new programs, and expanding the new face of the city like any standard city is supposed to be,” she said.

Other aspirants who picked up nomination forms included former opposition political analyst and now board member of the Uganda Investment Authority, Dr. Patrick Wakida, who is aspiring to be Member of Parliament for Kabweri Constituency in Kibuku District.

The NRM party primaries for all MP aspirants are scheduled to take place on July 16, 2025.
