Only two candidates are left in the race for the Elgon North County parliamentary seat in Bulambuli District — incumbent MP Gerald Nangoli and Irene Muloni, the current Woman MP for Bulambuli.
This follows the withdrawal of four contenders — Nagemesi Buyi Stephen, Sam Gibuzuyi, Mungo Patrick, and Nakisisa Ballak — who had initially contested in the NRM primaries and were planning to run as independents.
The four stepped down after meeting President Yoweri Museveni during his campaign visit to Bulambuli. They revealed that the President advised them to unite behind one candidate to strengthen party cohesion and focus on development. The group later declared their support for Irene Muloni, citing her strong links with government and her ability to deliver for the people of Elgon North.
While addressing voters in Buginyanya sub-county, the former aspirants accompanied Muloni on her campaign trail and urged their supporters from the NRM primaries to rally behind her in the general election. They also noted irregularities in the party primaries but said their focus now is on unity and service to the people.
Nagemesi Buyi said their decision to back Muloni was motivated by her proven dedication to improving service delivery in areas such as road infrastructure, electricity extension, and community development. Mungo Patrick praised Muloni as a capable and experienced leader who, during her tenure as Minister of Energy, oversaw the expansion of electricity access in Bulambuli and helped create employment opportunities for youth.
Muloni welcomed their support, describing it as a demonstration of political maturity and unity. She commended the former aspirants for putting the interests of the people above personal ambition and promised to work closely with them to develop the constituency.
She pledged to follow up on the construction of the Simu Kona–Masila–Bufumbo road, which she said will help farmers transport their produce more easily to markets. Muloni also vowed to address electricity challenges in areas that still lack power connections or face frequent outages, promising to liaise with relevant ministries to ensure more homes are connected.
Local residents expressed optimism about Muloni’s campaign message. Oliva Kisyelo and Nagayi Derick from Sisyi Parish in Buginyanya Sub-county said Elgon North needs leaders focused on improving roads, extending electricity, and supporting youth skilling programs. They applauded Muloni’s commitment to unity and practical solutions for community challenges.
Muloni has so far completed her mobilization in Buginyanya Sub-county, covering the parishes of Kirwari, Tabali, Ginduno, Sisyi, Goozi, and Bunataje. She is expected to begin her campaigns in Bufumbo Sub-county tomorrow as the contest between her and Gerald Nangoli enters a decisive phase.
