Police in the Elgon region have refuted claims of shooting and killing of one of the National Unity Platform (NUP)’s supporter in Sironko District.
Social media was awash with the shooting and killing of one Lubuulwa Hamza during the campaign procession of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine, the NUP's presidential flag bearer in Sironko District today.
The incident unfolded on the afternoon of January 4, 2026, in Buchibindi Village, Budadiri Town Council, as the convoy of the NUP presidential candidate Bobi Wine was moving through the area.
According to police reports, a man identified as Lubulwa Hamza, driving a Toyota Wish (Registration UBM 430K), allegedly disrupted the procession through reckless driving. Police state that Hamza overtook the candidate’s convoy at high speed and nearly collided with a security vehicle.
Security details reportedly flagged Hamza down, but he refused to stop, prompting a high-speed pursuit. Upon being intercepted, a physical confrontation ensued between the driver and security forces.
"On being stopped, he resisted lawful arrest and, in the ensuing scuffle, sustained a wound to the head," SP Taitika Rogers noted in an official statement.
Following the scuffle, Hamza was transported to a hospital for treatment. Police emphasized that his injury was a result of the physical struggle during his arrest rather than gunfire.
"The allegations that he was shot are false and not supported by clinical evidence," Taitika added.
Kyagulanyi has concluded his 3-day campaign tour in Bugisu sub-region where he has campaigned in Mbale City, Mbale district, Bududa Sironko and Bulambuli District seeking elections for his presidential bid on National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
