LWENGO, Uganda — High-stakes political drama exploded into a physical brawl Sunday as a “Buganda for Museveni” campaign rally descended into a riotous scene of betrayal and public humiliation.
In a shocking display of party infighting, Bukoto South legislator Twaha Kagabo was forcibly seized by a “charged” mob of National Resistance Movement supporters and physically carried away from the venue after storming the VIP section.
The Kiwangala playground became a battlefield when Kagabo—a political turncoat who recently defected from the National Unity Platform—gatecrashed the event to demand the spotlight. The move triggered a explosive confrontation with his arch-rival, NRM flagbearer Haji Muyanja Mbabali, who publicly branded the MP a “nuisance” and an “intruder.”
Witnesses watched in disbelief as a brawl erupted in the VIP tent, with Mbabali and his wife, Mariam Najjemba, confronting the defiant legislator. Despite the presence of high-ranking cabinet ministers, the situation spiraled out of control, forcing the police and the Resident District Commissioner to intervene.
The humiliation reached its peak when Kagabo’s pleas for mercy were ignored. A group of furious NRM loyalists stormed the podium, hoisted the MP into the air, and marched him out of the rally like a common trespasser, dumping him at a nearby trading center as the crowd cheered.
The violence followed a stern warning from NRM National Vice Chairperson Al Haji Moses Kigongo, who told the electorate to treat independent candidates like political outcasts. Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa and other top officials looked on as the party purged the “rebel” from its ranks in real-time.
Even the Patriotic League of Uganda turned its back on the embattled lawmaker, with Secretary General David Kabanda ruthlessly telling his former ally to “concede defeat and drop out.”
