The Recently Elected Mbale City MP, Hon. Lydia Wanyoto Yesterday Donated Over Ten (10) Tonnes Of Maiz Seeds In Mbale City.
While addressing the media during the distribution process, Wanyoto noted that Food insecurity remains a significant challenge in Uganda, despite the country's agricultural potential and fertile land.
"I've distributed over ten tonnes of maize seed over thousands of farmers across Mbale City under my program of Food Security at House Hold. I believe this is the first step in fighting poverty at household level. No one deserves to stay or sleep hungry. Let's fight hunger together"- Wanyoto Said.
It should be noted that Uganda hosts one of the world's largest refugee populations (over 1.9 million as of recent estimates), which strains resources, while climate variability, poverty, and other factors affect many households.Current Status (as of early 2026)According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis covering the projection period from August 2025 to February 2026.
An estimated 1.42 million people (in the national population, excluding refugees) are facing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 "Crisis" or above). This represents an improvement from the previous period (April–July 2025), when around 2.46 million were in this category, largely due to stronger harvests and seasonal factors.
She further asked farmers to utilize this rain season to plant enough food in order to fight food insecurity and poverty eradication at house levels.
