Minister Wanyoto demands for an Airport & Public University as Bugisu MPs Hail Landmark Mbale Regional Wildlife Zoo as Boost for Tourism, Jobs,& Education

Bugisu area MPs have warmly welcomed the establishment of Uganda’s first regional wildlife education centre (UWEC-Mbale) in Mbale, describing it as a major boost for tourism, employment, and conservation education in the sub-region.

Hon. Lydia Wanyoto Mutende (NRM), Woman MP for Mbale City and Minister of State for Public Service, commended the project for its potential to create employment opportunities and strengthen economic linkages across the region.
Wanyoto further appealed to the government to establish a public university in the region, noting that neighbouring areas like Bukedi and Teso already have operational public universities.
"Having got a Zoo, we now need an Airport/Airstrip and a Public University to go to the next level"- Wanyoto.
Hon. Geoffrey Wokuri (NRM), MP for Bungokho County South in Mbale District, urged UWEC-Mbale management to prioritise local talent in job allocations. He also called on the government to upgrade the road leading to the nearby cultural site to improve connectivity and enhance tourism.
Hon. Rose Mutonyi Masaba (Independent), Woman MP for Manafwa District, encouraged teachers to utilise the new facility for educational purposes, noting that the journey from Eastern Uganda to Entebbe has now been significantly shortened.
The UWEC-Mbale facility, officially launched around 12 June 2026, features translocated animals such as lions, zebras, and various birds. It aims to serve as a living classroom, wildlife rescue centre, and tourism hub for the eastern region.
This development marks a significant step toward decentralising wildlife conservation and education efforts in Uganda.
