Minister Nambozo Declares Bid to Challenge Hajji Lumolo for NRM District Chairmanship

The political rivalry between State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Hon. Florence Nambozo Mayoga, and long-serving Sironko NRM district chairperson, Hajji Sulaiman Lumolo Mafabi, is intensifying. The latest development indicates that Minister Nambozo intends to contest against Lumolo for the NRM top slot in Sironko—a position he has held since the district’s creation.

Hajji Lumolo is widely credited for building the NRM district headquarters using his personal resources, making Sironko the only district in the region with its own party residence. However, Minister Nambozo argues that Sironko deserves more than just offices.

“The persistent confusion within the party has provided fertile ground for the opposition to thrive over the last 20 years,” she noted.

Nambozo claims the current district executive committee is deeply divided, with each member working independently. She warns that such disunity has crippled the party’s ability to organize and mobilize effectively. “A disunited team can never deliver a win for a party,” she said. She adds that her first mission will be to unite all NRM leaders in the district before consolidating support to strengthen the party’s base.

According to Nambozo, the NRM government has delivered on major pledges in Sironko. She cites the Shs 50 billion Nabudere Memorial Vocational Institute in Buyobo, the Shs 47 billion St. James Wapakhabulo Institute of Nursing and Midwifery, and the ongoing construction of the Namagumba–Budadiri–Nalugugu road as key achievements. She believes these developments should be used as a foundation for political consolidation.

However, she criticizes the current leadership for failing to unite members and for limiting mobilization efforts to a few family circles—something she says has alienated veteran cadres and stifled growth. With the NRM electoral roadmap released, Nambozo is encouraging members to actively participate in the upcoming grassroots elections, which begin on May 1st and end with the district conference on May 25th.

In 2021, Nambozo lost the NRM flag bearer race to Hajji Lumolo’s daughter, Aisha Nabulo Mafabi, prompting her to run as an independent—an election she ultimately won. She now insists that for the party to regain trust and expand its support base, a change in district leadership is necessary.

That year (2021), the NRM lost all three parliamentary seats and the LCV chairperson slot to the opposition (FDC and independents), though it retained a majority in the district council—securing 54 out of 89 LCV councilor positions.

All eyes are now on whether Minister Nambozo can mount a strong enough challenge to unseat Hajji Lumgolo, the influential NRM district chairperson who also happens to be the husband of the party’s national treasurer.
