The ruling NRM party has been hit by political drama after Onesmas Twinamasiko, its flag bearer for the Bugangaizi East parliamentary seat in Kakumiro District, was remanded to prison over allegations of assaulting Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.
Twinamasiko was arrested on Wednesday and arraigned before Kibaale Chief Magistrate Nazifah Namayanja, where he was charged with assault and causing bodily harm. He denied the charges but was sent on remand to Kibaale Government Prison until September 10, 2025, when his bail application will be heard.
According to the charge sheet, the alleged incident occurred on July 17, 2025, during the declaration of NRM primary election results at the party’s offices in Kakumiro District. Witness accounts suggest a heated confrontation broke out, during which Twinamasiko is accused of attacking the Prime Minister in full view of party members and security personnel.
The case has triggered widespread debate, not only because of the gravity of the allegations but also due to the political weight of those involved. Nabbanja, a powerful figure in both government and the NRM, commands strong influence in Kakumiro, while Twinamasiko’s candidacy represents the party’s next phase of leadership in Bugangaizi East.
Observers say the development could reshape the political dynamics in Kakumiro, raising questions about NRM’s internal discipline and the fallout from its recently concluded primaries.
For now, Twinamasiko remains behind bars as the ruling party grapples with the embarrassment of having its parliamentary flag bearer facing criminal charges tied to the Prime Minister herself.
