Hon. Eng. Julius Nakiyi has offered thoughtful and balanced views on the ongoing conflicts within the Bugisu/Bumasaba cultural institution, observing that while such institutions are intended to promote unity, the current situation has instead deepened divisions among the people.
He called for calm, open dialogue, and a sincere reflection on whether the institution is still serving its original purpose of uniting the community.
He further noted that as elected leaders, they will come together to forge a clear and unified position on the way forward, with the aim of restoring peace, stability, and cohesion in the subregion.

He emphasized that the Bagisu/Bamasaba have the fundamental right to determine their own destiny regarding their cultural institution, and that any sustainable resolution must be grounded in consultation, consensus, and the collective will of the people.
In light of these reflections, many are beginning to question whether the current cultural structures are achieving their intended roles. Comparisons have been drawn with regions like Ankole, where unity has been sustained without similar cultural institutions, allowing greater focus on production and wealth creation.
From this perspective, there is a growing school of thought that prioritizing economic empowerment, particularly through coffee growing and household income generation, could offer a more practical path to unity and progress. Ultimately, the conversation now shifts toward whether reform, restructuring, or even a complete rethink of the institution is necessary to align with the aspirations and future of the people of Bugisu.
