Sports: Saka Sends Arsenal FC to Historic UEFA Champions League Final After 20-Year Wait

Arsenal FC booked their place in the UEFA Champions League Final for the first time in 20 years after a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, with Bukayo Saka scoring the decisive goal at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Managed by Mikel Arteta, Arsenal sealed the semi-final second leg late in the first half through Saka’s composed finish. The result secured a 2-1 aggregate win, following a 1-1 draw in Madrid last week.

The Gunners will now face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final set for May 30 in Budapest. Defending champions PSG hold a narrow 5-4 advantage ahead of the second leg in Munich.

It was a cathartic night for Arsenal, who return to Europe’s biggest stage for the first time since their 2-1 defeat to FC Barcelona in 2006, their only previous final appearance.

Despite their rich history, Arsenal have never won the Champions League. Their European honours remain the 1994 Cup Winners’ Cup and the 1970 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, while their most recent continental final ended in a 4-1 loss to Chelsea FC in the 2019 Europa League.

This season, however, could become the greatest in the club’s history as they chase a Premier League and Champions League double. Even the legendary “Invincibles” side led by Arsene Wenger may be eclipsed if Arteta’s squad completes the job.

Fittingly, it was Saka, the homegrown star of the current era, who delivered the breakthrough. His 44th-minute strike came after a slick move involving Viktor Gyokeres and Leandro Trossard, with the England international reacting quickest to slot home from close range after a save by Jan Oblak.

Atletico threatened a response after the break, but Arsenal held firm. Gabriel Magalhaes produced a crucial last-ditch tackle, while David Raya denied Antoine Griezmann with a sharp save.

The victory marks a significant moment in Arsenal’s resurgence under Arteta, who has rebuilt the team into genuine contenders. Once criticised for lacking mental strength after a shaky run of form, the North London side now stands on the brink of history.

With the Premier League title also within reach, boosted by Manchester City dropping points earlier this week, Arsenal are just weeks away from potentially securing a historic double.

For now, their focus shifts to Budapest, where one final hurdle remains between them and a first-ever Champions League crown.
