Tension flared at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) offices in Mbale on Tuesday after Bungokho Central Member of Parliament, Hon. Muhamood Masaba, dramatically stormed the premises demanding the unconditional return of music systems and instruments confiscated from local bars.
The outspoken MP said he was compelled to act following a massive outcry from his constituents, who complained that the seizure had crippled their businesses and entertainment spots.
Witnesses described the scene as charged, with Masaba insisting that the equipment belonging to affected bar owners be released without further delay or conditions.
According to a statement from NEMA, a joint team comprising the Environment Protection Force (EPF) and UPDF personnel, working through the NEMA Regional Office in Mbale, impounded sound systems and accessories last week from three establishments: Fredom Bar in Nabumali Town Council, Go Down City Bar, and Home Boys Bar, both in Nyondo Sub County, Mbale District.
NEMA justified the operation, stating the bars were emitting excessive noise that was highly disruptive to neighbouring residents.
The authority reminded the public that emitting noise above permissible levels is an offence punishable under the National Environment Act Cap. 181.
The dramatic intervention by MP Masaba has now thrust the operation into the political spotlight, raising questions about the balance between environmental regulation and the livelihoods of local businesses in the bustling Mbale region.
As of now, it remains unclear whether NEMA will comply with the MP’s demands or stand firm on enforcement of noise pollution laws.
Residents are divided, with some praising the crackdown on noise nuisance while others argue it threatens entertainment-driven incomes in the area.
This developing story has already sparked heated debates across Mbale, with many awaiting the next move from either the MP or NEMA officials.
