The Member of Parliament for Butiru County in Manafwa district, Hon Godfrey Wakooli Matembu, has welcomed Parliament’s approval of a loan facility worth over €160 million aimed at supporting coffee farmers across Uganda.
Speaking during a parliamentary session yesterday, Wakooli described the borrowing as a strategic investment that will boost agricultural productivity and improve the livelihoods of coffee-growing communities.
He noted that borrowing is a common practice for both governments and private businesses, emphasizing that development often requires access to affordable financing. Wakooli cited his experience as a businessman, saying that many successful enterprises rely on loans to expand and sustain their operations.
The legislator who is as well chairperson for Bugisu Parliamentary CAUCUS said the facility will greatly benefit farmers in the Bugisu sub-region, one of Uganda’s leading coffee-producing areas. He explained that the funds are expected to support coffee farmers through irrigation and other agricultural interventions aimed at increasing production and resilience to climate change.
According to Wakooli, the financing is in line with the government’s broader agenda of transforming household incomes through agriculture. He added that the initiative complements programs such as the Parish Development Model, which seeks to empower farmers and stimulate economic growth at the grassroots level.
The loan facility is expected to strengthen Uganda’s coffee sector, enhance exports, and improve the welfare of farming communities across the country.
