KAPCHORWA, Uganda — In a heartbreaking incident that has shaken the region, a tragic accident involving children from the King David Children’s Home has resulted in the deaths of 20 children and one adult, with dozens more injured and receiving treatment across multiple hospitals.
Minister Balaam, accompanied by Hon. Minister Simon Mulongo, visited the affected children on Friday to assess the situation and offer support.
The delegation found 9 children in critical condition at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, 16 receiving treatment at Kaserem Health Centre, 3 at Bulambuli Health Centre IV, and the remainder being cared for at Kapchorwa Hospital.
In an official statement, Minister Balaam expressed profound sorrow over the losses:
“Sadly, 20 children and 1 adult, who happens to be the founder and director, Mr Tadeo Ssekade, have gone to be with the Lord. We extend our deepest condolences to their families, loved ones, and the entire King David community. We continue to pray for the quick and full recovery of all those still receiving treatment.”
The minister invoked scripture for comfort, quoting Psalm 147:3:
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Mr. Tadeo Ssekade was not only a victim but a dedicated leader who founded and directed the King David Children’s Home, an institution that had provided care and hope for vulnerable children in the area. His passing, alongside the young lives lost, has left the community in mourning.
Minister Balaam also commended the swift and heroic response of local residents and emergency services.
“I sincerely thank the residents of Tingey County, Kaserem, who responded immediately as first responders, together with the regional emergency teams, for their compassion, courage, and tireless efforts in rescuing and caring for the victims. Your selfless service has brought hope to many families during this difficult time.”
The accident has prompted an outpouring of support and prayers across Uganda.
Authorities have not yet released full details on the cause of the crash, but the focus remains on caring for the survivors and supporting grieving families.
