“100 Days Promise Delivered?” Bungokho North MP Shafiga Wanyenya Reportedly Procures Modern Ambulance for Constituency

Bungokho North Member of Parliament Hon. Shafiga Wanyenya has reportedly purchased a well-equipped, modern ambulance for her constituents in Mbale District, marking what supporters are hailing as a major early achievement in her first 100 days in Parliament.

The reported procurement forms part of the “massive” deliverables the legislator promised voters during her hard-fought campaign. Wanyenya, who defeated four male contenders—including the incumbent—to clinch the seat in the January 2026 general elections, had repeatedly pledged to prioritise emergency health services in the mountainous constituency.

Sources close to the MP indicate the ambulance is fully equipped and ready for deployment to ease emergency referrals, particularly for expectant mothers, accident victims, and critically ill patients who previously faced long and difficult journeys to higher-level facilities such as Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.

Residents contacted for this story expressed cautious optimism. “If confirmed and put to work, this will be a game-changer,” said one community leader in Wanale Sub-county. “Many mothers have lost their lives or their babies on the way to hospital because of poor roads and lack of reliable transport. An ambulance stationed here will save lives.”

Bungokho North has long struggled with inadequate health infrastructure. Most facilities in the area are Health Centre IIIs, and the rugged terrain of sub-counties such as Wanale and Budwale makes emergency response particularly challenging. During her campaigns, Wanyenya frequently highlighted the need for better maternal health support, noting that the absence of a dedicated ambulance had contributed to preventable deaths.

The MP’s “100 Days” agenda, which she promoted heavily after being declared winner, also included plans for a youth parliament, girl-child empowerment programmes, and livelihood projects such as goat rearing. The reported ambulance purchase is being viewed by her supporters as the first tangible fulfilment of those commitments.

Wanyenya was sworn in as MP for the 2026–2031 term in May. She rose to prominence after the NRM electoral tribunal earlier declared her the party flag bearer following a disputed primary, and she went on to secure victory at the ballot with 9,844 votes.

While details of the exact cost, source of funding, and formal handover ceremony have not yet been officially announced by her office, the development has already generated excitement across the constituency. Local leaders are calling for transparency on how the ambulance will be managed, maintained, and stationed to ensure it serves the entire Bungokho North area equitably.

If confirmed, the procurement would place Wanyenya among the few newly elected legislators to deliver a high-visibility health asset so early in their term. Constituents say they will be watching closely to see the ambulance commissioned and put into active service in the coming weeks.
