Parliament Vets Justice Abodo for Principal Judge Role

KAMPALA – Uganda’s Parliament on Tuesday began vetting Justice Jane Frances Abodo, the Director of Public Prosecutions, who has been nominated by President Yoweri Museveni to serve as the country’s next Principal Judge.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among said the Appointments Committee of the House convened to consider Abodo’s nomination along with candidates proposed for the positions of Chairperson and Members of the Leadership Code Tribunal.

“The committee has vetted Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, who has been nominated for the position of Principal Judge. The committee also vetted the nominees for the positions of Chairperson and Members of the Leadership Code Tribunal. The committee’s report will be submitted to the Appointing Authority in accordance with House rules,” Among said in a statement.

Abodo, 46, is a career judicial officer who rose through the ranks of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions before becoming DPP in 2020.

If approved, she will replace Justice Flavian Zeija, who was promoted to Deputy Chief Justice earlier this year.

The Principal Judge is the third-highest judicial officer in Uganda, responsible for the administration of the High Court and oversight of magistrates’ courts.

The vetting comes as Uganda’s judiciary faces pressure to reduce case backlogs and strengthen anti-corruption efforts. Abodo has been credited with leading high-profile prosecutions, including Uganda’s first war crimes conviction against a former Lord’s Resistance Army commander.
