Mbarara, Uganda – A female student allegedly from Bishop Stuart University (BSU) has been compelled to issue a public apology after she was found in possession of a mobile phone reported stolen by its owner.
According to details emerging from the incident, the student was confronted and subsequently made to apologise following the discovery.
In her apology, the student admitted to taking the phone but offered a justification, claiming that her own mobile phone had been stolen earlier.
She reportedly stated that her action was intended to "compensate herself" for the loss she had suffered. The incident has sparked mixed reactions within the university community and on social media, with some condemning the act of taking the law into one's own hands, while others expressed sympathy for the student, citing the frustration many victims of theft experience on campuses.
University authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding disciplinary measures, if any, that will be taken against the student. However, sources close to the matter indicate that the matter was resolved amicably after the apology, with the recovered phone returned to its rightful owner.
Theft of mobile phones remains a persistent challenge in many Ugandan universities, often prompting students to take extra security precautions. Bishop Stuart University, a private institution in Mbarara, has previously recorded similar cases of petty theft among students.
This latest development comes as a reminder of the importance of reporting theft incidents to university security or police rather than resorting to self-help measures that could escalate into further conflict.
Authorities have urged students to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly to prevent such occurrences.
