Embattled Namisindwa LC5 Chairperson Jackson Wakweika has declined to hand over office, claiming he remains in office until new leaders are sworn in.
Government issued an instrument directing all outgoing leaders to officially hand over by 12th May 2026, stating that the swearing-in of the President marked the beginning of the new government whose swearing in starts from 13th to 29th May.
Most leaders across the country, including those in Mbale City, Bududa, and Bulambuli, as well as Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, complied with the directive and officially handed over their offices.
In Namisindwa, however, Wakweika has refused to hand over both the office and the official vehicle, insisting that his term will only end after the swearing-in of the new leaders. He shocked many residents when he reported to office on Wednesday, 13th May, and worked throughout the day. Concerned citizens argue that the government vehicle assigned to the LC5 Chairperson should be parked at the police station in line with guidance issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government.
The RDC, Elijah Madoi, was informed by concerned citizens and pledged to follow up on the matter.
Swearing-in ceremony for the new leaders in Namisindwa has been scheduled for Thursday, 21st May 2026, at the district headquarters. Wakweika lost the LC5 seat to his former Youth Councillor, Emma Bwayo, in the January 21st elections.
