The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has unveiled plans to construct permanent headquarters at Plot 10, Kyadondo Road in Kampala, where it currently operates.
The party’s secretary general, Richard Todwong, said the project is a fulfilment of a pledge by the party chairman, Yoweri Museveni, who committed to fund the construction.
“This is an assurance from the chairman. Whoever thought the NRM cannot build a permanent home will be proved wrong. Preparations are under way to begin construction,” Todwong said.
He added that the party plans to spend more than Shs11bn to establish offices in every district and regional centres. The funding, he said, will partly come from contributions collected from members during the recent party nominations.
Todwong also revealed that the NRM will embark on a nationwide reconciliation exercise aimed at harmonising members who lost in the recent elections.
He said the initiative, which is traditionally carried out after elections, is intended to maintain unity within party ranks and refocus members on the party’s agenda.
Meanwhile, as preparations intensify for the swearing-in of President Museveni, the party’s national treasurer, Barbara Nekesa, said members have been invited to collect facilitation allowances for attending the ceremony.
Nekesa said accreditation will take place in Nakawa on 11 May, urging members to keep time when picking their passes.
She added that members of the public will be able to follow the swearing-in ceremony on screens that will be installed on selected streets across Kampala.
“This will give the public an opportunity to witness the event and appreciate the NRM’s 40 years in power,” she said.
Separately, the party is pushing for amendments to the Local Government Act to strengthen coordination between local governments and civil servants in implementing its manifesto.
