In recognition of Bugisu Sub-region’s historical role in the NRA liberation struggle, the honour of nominating President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his sixth term has been given to none other than Buyela Christopher. This gesture is seen as a way of celebrating Bugisu’s enduring contribution to the NRM cause and the liberation of Uganda.
Buyela, a well-known NRM mobiliser and youth advocate, was surprised by the news. “I didn’t know I was going to be the one to nominate the President,” he said. “But I am ready and happy. This is a big blessing, and I will do it with pride because I support President Museveni fully.”
The decision to assign this task to Bugisu reflects the region’s long-standing loyalty and sacrifice during the liberation struggle. Buyela has already proven himself a strong pillar of the party, especially through his leadership in organising the first-ever Bugisu Youth Symposium, an event graced by the President himself.
At the symposium, President Museveni pledged to support youth groups in Bugisu with jobs and financial help through associations and Saccos. The funds are expected to be released in August.
Responding to critics of President Museveni’s long leadership, Buyela explained, “People forget that Uganda has had regular elections every five years since 1996. Ugandans have always chosen their leader, and that is democracy. From Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to Tibuhaburwa, and now Semalungu — the people are still choosing him.”
Buyela Christopher’s selection is not only a personal honour but a proud moment for the entire Bugisu Sub-region. It marks a return of national recognition to a region that gave so much during the country’s struggle for peace and stability.
