Proceedings in the murder trial of Christopher Okello Onyum took a puzzling turn on Tuesday after the accused declined to continue with the hearing, leaving the court and observers confused.
Okello, who is facing charges over the killing of four children at a kindergarten in Ggaba, made the remarks at the close of the day’s session after returning from a recess that lasted over an hour.
Addressing the trial judge, Alice Komuhangi Khaukha, he said he was unable to proceed.
“My Lord, I am not able to continue today,” he said, appearing hesitant.
When asked to explain his condition, Okello stated that he was unwell but struggled to clearly articulate the nature of his illness.
Pressed further by the court, he responded ambiguously, “Yes… yes, maybe, I think, my Lord.”
Moments later, he added, “It is a script, my Lord.”
The remark appeared to catch the court off guard, prompting visible confusion from the bench.
“It is a script?” Justice Komuhangi asked, seeking clarification. “What did he say?” she added, underscoring the uncertainty in the courtroom
Earlier in the proceedings, Okello had drawn criticism from members of the public gallery after he was seen laughing during serious witness testimonies.
Some residents from the Ggaba community described the conduct as insensitive, given the gravity of the charges.
“I am so annoyed. I don’t understand why he is laughing. Does he think it is funny?” one attendee said.
His courtroom behavior, combined with the cryptic statement, has raised concern among those closely following the case.
The court has since directed prison authorities to produce Okello’s medical report before proceedings resume on Thursday.
Okello is expected to appear before the High Court for the third time as the trial continues to draw national attention.
